The province of Cadiz: a place where history intertwines with coastal beauty and lighthouses mark the way to a journey full of discoveries. Since ancient times, lighthouses have been silent guardians of the coasts, guiding sailors with their comforting light. We encourage you to take a tour of some of the most emblematic lighthouses in Cadiz, each with its own unique history and charm.
The Cadiz Lighthouse: A Tower into the Past
The current Cadiz lighthouse is an iron structure designed by Rafael de la Cerda in 1908. It was the second electric lighthouse in Spain, standing 41 metres above sea level.
However, this was not the first lighthouse built on the San Sebastián islet. It is said that the Phoenicians and Romans erected temples here. Legends speak of a colossal tower topped with a golden figure that served as a guide to navigators.
In 1457, Venetian sailors sought refuge here, affected by the plague. As a gesture of gratitude, they built a tower and a hermitage in honour of San Sebastián. A great storm destroyed it in 1587.
In 1617, a tower with a large lantern for maritime assistance was erected again. It was refurbished to reach twice its height in 1766. This building can be seen in the model at the Museum of the Cortes of Cadiz. However, this lighthouse was dismantled in May 1898 to avoid possible reprisals after the sinking of the battleship Maine in Cuba. The base of the old tower remains as a testament. This was preserved until the renovation of the San Sebastián Castle in 2010.
The Trafalgar Lighthouse: Witness to History
Continuing our journey south, we find the iconic Trafalgar Lighthouse, located near the cape of the same name. This lighthouse, built in the 19th century, is famous for its connection to the legendary Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. From the top of its tower, you can gaze upon the same horizon that once witnessed the British, French, and Spanish fleets in one of the most decisive naval battles in history. Today, the Trafalgar Lighthouse serves as a reminder of those historical events, as well as an active lighthouse guiding ships on their Atlantic journey.
The Chipiona Lighthouse: Maritime Majesty
In Chipiona stands the tallest lighthouse in Spain and one of the tallest in the world. With its 69-metre height, it is a true architectural marvel dominating the coastal landscape. Built in the mid-19th century, the Chipiona lighthouse is an iconic landmark in the region, offering spectacular views from its viewpoint. In addition to its function as a lighthouse, this historical monument is also a symbol of Chipiona’s maritime identity and a must-visit for history and architecture enthusiasts. It can be visited for a modest fee, always by prior reservation. Get ready to climb the 322 steps up to the lantern!
The Barbate Lighthouse
The Barbate lighthouse is located on the Paseo Marítimo overlooking El Carmen Beach. It is a unique cylindrical tower with white and red stripes. Apart from its originality, it is practically contemporary: it was built in 1980. Besides its peculiar appearance, another factor that makes it special is that the lighthouse itself doubles as a sundial over the square where it is located.
Before the current lighthouse, there was another one built in 1935 just behind it, in the rear of the house occupied by the lighthouse keeper in charge of its maintenance. It consisted of a structure made up of four reinforced concrete pillars and a platform on which the light was situated. It was demolished in 1992.
